Converting speedo??

Postby HondaPoweredChris » Sun 10th Feb 2008, 09:03pm

I am hopefully aiming to convert my boring rover speedo/dash to a centre console speedo but wondered how easy and how much it costs around about, and if it will run off original wiring etc. My speedo at the moment is standard on a 1996 equinox with no rev counter.

Any ideas people??
Regards miniEq/Chris

minispares and minisport have a conversion wiring loom for the electrics, you can just move the speedo cable but im sure you have to modify the plate in the middle of the bulk head

How do you fit the wiring loom etc, would i be better getting my local auto elctrics to wire it in?
And how do you modify the bulkhead?... can you buy the part for it? and would it be bolt on or weld on.? Its just on a late injection mini you peel the dash away and theres TONS of wires every where. PLus it got the immobiliser light...

Seems theres more to it but i so want it as they look the part instead of standard boring stuff.

The conversion loom is just plug and play from what I remember. I had plans to do this to my '94 Tahiti but gave up when I found that there was more to it than met the eye!! The major stumbling block was mounting the centre pod to the later bulkhead and all it's wiring, I'd imagine theres more on an spi.

Not impossible, just will require thought and effort, which at the time I had neither!! :P

The conversion wiring loom basically allows you to plug the cars wiring in one end and the other end into the centre setup.

It's a fairly major job, but straightforward, even without the "conversion" loom.

I haven't done an injection car, but done a few 80s Minis. Bascially take the plateb OUT that covers the bulkhead hole, and bolt the centre binnacle in the same holes, then join all wires colour to colour!

sounds complicated ???????????????? it would cost so much if i asked my auto electrical place to do it and also because they probably haven't done anything like that for a while theres no telling how they might bodge it. :?

Not complicated at all, but it IS time consuming, probably 3 or 4 hours work in total!

I have seen in MOSS catalogue a conversion for £369.99 which inlcudes everything for the conversion this is quite abit so wanna really know how its done from you guys even though i think the kit comes with instructions..

Also how exactly, is the oil pressure gauge plumbed in??? Cause i think the 3 clock binnicle has an oil pressure gauge as well as temp gauge/ fuel gauge, which is basically what i got on standard clocks but instead of oil pressure gauge you get the warning light...

Any ideas then
